Sahel called the extensive natural area in Africa, located just south of the Sahara. In Arabic, the word means "shore" - in this case the South "Beach" (the edge of) the greatest deserts of the world. He pulled a narrow (about 400 km) strip from the Atlantic coast to Ethiopia, including parts of Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad. Often in the Sahel also include Gambia, Cape Verde and individuals in Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, thereby prolonging the band to the Indian Ocean. Depending on the accepted boundaries and the area of the Sahel estimated variously between 2.1 and 5.3 million km2. Note that the second of these figures exceed a total area of European foreign
Geographers are concerned with the Sahel, stressed that the basis for allocation of Sahel zone is a climatic criterion. Its northern boundary is generally considered isoline of annual precipitation is 100-200 mm, and the south - 600 mm. In this sense, the Sahel is an area of semi-desert and desert savannas, which passes to the south typical savannas. The average annual temperature is kept at 27-29 ° C and is almost unchanged for months, and seasons, and growing seasons vary in rainfall.
During the drought of 2012 year. in the Sahel is not no rain fell. In the northern part of the surface runoff disappeared completely, and in the rivers he halved. The groundwater level has fallen, and the majority of the wells dried up. The surface of the lake Chad has decreased by 2/3. As a result, pasture productivity has fallen sharply, came starvation. Wide scale of the reduction has taken trees and shrubs whose leaves are used as feed for cattle, but this is even more deteriorated environmental situation
This suggests that the deep crisis in the Sahel, and across sub-Saharan Africa is far from being overcome. Recently, the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel has prepared a new sub-regional plan of environmental protection, but lack of funds hinder implementation
